Bulk Cat5 Ethernet Cable: Solid Core, Custom Lengths, and the CCA Caveat

🌐 Why bulk cable wins: You cut the exact length you need. No coiled-up excess behind the desk, media center, or rack. For structured cabling — in-wall runs to keystone jacks — bulk solid-core cable is the standard, punched down rather than crimped.

🔧 Solid vs stranded: Solid core is stiff, holds its shape, and has slightly better conductivity per foot — correct for permanent in-wall runs that never move. Stranded is flexible and forgiving of repeated bending — correct for patch cables that get moved. This is solid core, so it is meant for permanent runs.

⚠️ The CCA caveat: CCA (copper-clad aluminum) is not rated for Power over Ethernet (PoE). The aluminum core’s higher resistance means it can heat up under PoE load. For data-only connections at moderate lengths, CCA Cat5 works. For PoE or long runs, use solid copper.

🔍 Buying guide: Cat5e supports gigabit up to 100m — still fine for most home and small-office networks. Cat6 adds headroom but costs more and is stiffer.
