Binding Post Banana Jacks: Connecting Bare Wire Without a Plug

Not every connection has a banana plug on the end. Binding posts handle bare wire and plugs alike.

🔌 What a binding post does: It combines a banana socket with a screw-down clamp. You can either insert a 4mm banana plug into the front, or loosen the collar and wrap bare wire around the post, then tighten it down. Two connection methods in one terminal.

🎵 Where this matters in audio: Speakers and amplifiers often mix connection styles — one component has banana jacks, another has bare-wire screw terminals. A binding post bridges both. It is also the classic terminal on test equipment, letting you attach a probe, a clip, or a bare wire depending on the job.

🔍 What to check: The post should be solid metal (brass or copper) with good plating — flimsy posts strip threads easily. The collar must tighten smoothly without binding. Hexagonal body posts are easier to hold steady while tightening than smooth round ones.

🛒 A pair (red + black) is the usual starting unit; more if you are wiring a multi-way speaker selector or a test panel.
