SAE Extension Cable: Extending a 12V Connection the Right Way

An SAE extension is the simplest SAE product — a male on one end, a female on the other — and also the one where polarity mistakes happen most.

🔌 What it does: It lengthens an existing SAE connection. A battery tender that is 2 feet short of the outlet, a solar panel lead that needs to reach the controller, an accessory that lives further from the battery than the stock cable allows. One extension fixes it.

⚠️ The polarity trap, again: Every SAE extension flips polarity end-to-end. If you are lucky, a reversed connection simply fails to work. If you are unlucky, it damages whatever you plug in. Before connecting anything expensive, verify polarity at the device end with a multimeter.

🔍 What to check: Wire gauge matches the load (16AWG here is fine for tenders and low-draw accessories), the cable is long enough for the run without being a tripping hazard, and the connectors mate snugly — a loose SAE connection corrodes and heats under load.

🛒 One extension is usually safe. Chaining several extensions compounds both resistance and the polarity-flip risk — if you need more length, buy one longer cable instead of three short ones.
